MERCURY REMOVAL ADSORBENTS AND SYSTEMSMERCURY REMOVAL APPLICATIONSMercury, a toxic and corrosive material, must be removed from various gas and liquid streams. Since it is always present in very low concentrations, adsorption processes are most suitable for mercury removal. Activated carbon serves as an excellent carrier for various impregnates, which physically react with the mercury and hold it within the adsorbent particles. Very high levels of purity can be attained because of the high mercury removal efficiencies attained by the adsorption process.Mercury is present in a variety of waste products including contaminated soil, medical waste, fluorescent lamps, and contaminated water streams. A variety of mercury removal systems have been installed for mercury removal using MERSORBŪ adsorbents: Wastewater can be passed directly through beds of MERSORBŪ adsorbent. A paper describing such an application was published in Environmental Progress. Achieving Low Mercury Concentrations in Chlor-Alkali Wastewaters. A variety of hydrocarbon streams contain levels of mercury that will interfere with manufacturing processes if not removed. The mercury in synthesis gas streams will poison catalysts used in process reactors. Mercury will damage the aluminum heat exchangers used to liquefy methane. The applications are summarized in several Mercury Removal Case Studies. Laboratory tests have been performed on several simulated gas streams and the results have been used as a basis for the design of mercury removal processes. They include offgas from mixed waste incineration, a plasma enhanced melter, ventilation of a hot cell, and a chemical munitions incineration process. The Lab Experiment Data Summary shows the results of these tests.
