AMMONIA AND AMINE ADSORBENTS

Ammonia, low molecular weight amines, urea, and other low molecular weight alkali vapor compounds are not well retained by physical adsorption on activated carbon. Some chemical processing, fish processing or where animals are kept in confined spaces are typical sources for these vapors. NUCON International, Inc. has developed two specific adsorbents for the removal of these vapors.

AMMOSORB I-3 is a pelleted impregnated carbon treated to remove ammonia and amine vapors in the presence of other organic contaminants. Its equilibrium ammonia adsorption capacity is approximately 5.0 wt. %. AMMOSORB I-3 is non-corrosive and can be used in the 10-95% RH range and at residence times of 0.25 seconds. AMMOSORB I-3 cannot be in-place regenerated. It can be thermally reactivated similar to untreated activated carbon. For physical data see the AMMOSORB I-3 data sheet.

AMMOSORB II-3 is a pelleted impregnated carbon treated to remove low to high concentrations of ammonia and amine vapors. The impregnant can be corrosive to metal and it is recommended that plastic containers or panels be used. AMMOSORB II-3 has an equilibrium ammonia adsorption capacity of 6-8 wt.% in the 0-95% RH range and at residence times of 0.25 seconds. AMMOSORB II-3 cannot be in-place regenerated, however it can be thermally reactivated. For physical data see the AMMOSORB II-3 data sheet.

If other contaminants are also present the residence time needs to be increased or an unimpregnated guard bed should be used.

Both the AMMOSORB I and II are designed for gas phase applications and if exposed to liquid water they can lose their impregnant.

The standard AMMOSORB I and II are prepared on 3 mm carbon pellets. Other particle sizes can be made available.

Shelf life of unopened drums of AMMOSORB I and II stored in a weather protected area is five years minimum. Standard packaging is 5 cubic feet plastic lined drums.
