Vapor Emission Control

BRAYCYCLE® VOC Control from Pharmaceutical Semi-Works

A pharmaceutical company built a semi-works manufacturing plant requiring strict emission control of the solvents used. The VOC concentrations were relatively high, up to 1% by volume, and the air flows ranged from 300 cfm to 1800 cfm. A variety of solvents are used including methanol, methylene chloride, acetone and other alcohols.

A NUCON BRAYCYCLE® Solvent Vapor Recovery System was installed that handles the wide range of flow volumes and achieves 99+% recovery of the solvents. The short cool down time to operating temperature  (fifteen minutes) is a great advantage over other condensing processes since the unit is used only during the day and is restarted every morning. The NUCON BRAYCYCLE® skid is used as a platform for auxiliary equipment such as dust collectors, HEPA filter banks and chillers.

BRAYCYCLE® Hydrocarbon Vapor Control for Tank Car Filling

Railroad tank car filling operations at a refinery outside Budapest, Hungary emitted vapors that required control based on new environmental regulations. The NUCON BRAYCYCLE® system was chosen. This system compresses the vapor-laden air to over 100 psig and condenses the vapors at about -60°F. Over 99% removal of the vapors is achieved under these conditions. Since the system is skid mounted, transportation was easily accomplished and installation was simple. Stringent requirements for hazardous area operations are met by appropriate mechanical and electrical design features such as explosion relief valves and intrinsically safe control wiring. Continuous operation is insured by providing redundant equipment as required by the client specification.

Control of Fugitive Toluene Diisocyanate (TDI)

To meet local air pollution control regulations, a Montreal manufacturer of polyurethane foam required an air cleaning system capable of removing TDI. NUCON designed and supplied a 30,000 cfm treatment system consisting of pre-filter, HEPA filter and charcoal adsorber stages. The critical aspect of this project was selection of the best adsorbent for this application. The NUCON laboratory evaluated candidate adsorbents and determined the most suitable grade of activated carbon to accomplish TDI removal. The system has been in successful operation for many years.

Removal of Mercury from Hydrogen Gas

Detrex, a manufacturer of reagent grade hydrochloric acid, needed to remove mercury from a hydrogen stream they obtained from a chlor-alkali process in order to meet customers purity specifications. The hydrogen stream is saturated with moisture, and Detrex was concerned that the required hydrogen effluent quality (mercury concentration <0.1 ppm(v)) could not be met. NUCON demonstrated the capability of our MERSORB® mercury removal adsorbent with a pilot scale adsorber NUCON installed at the client's plant. The NUCON analytical laboratory provided low level mercury analysis and recommended instrumentation for online use. These efforts led to the installation of a full-sized treatment system, designed and fabricated by NUCON, that has been operating for over ten years providing pure hydrogen with mercury content below detectable levels.
