Since NUCON regularly deals with new products and processes, the use of small scale equipment to develop technical information is invaluable. Some chemical and physical processes can be simulated with laboratory-size equipment. If heat and mass transfer operations are involved, larger equipment is required to verify energy and mass balances. In some cases, the pilot process equipment must be transportable in order to be operated at the client=s site. NUCON has experience with all these options.

• Laboratory glassware is used to determine the capacity of liquid phase adsorbents to remove contaminants from solutions.

• Dynamic adsorption studies are performed in 2" diameter columns with appropriate gas analyzers.

• Regeneration tests for activated carbon using steam provide working capacity data for designing full scale systems.

• Adsorption and hot gas regeneration tests are performed in 5" diameter columns. Operating parameters for full-size systems are determined.

• A mobile Brayton cycle pilot plant with an airflow capacity of 150 scfm can be transported to a site to perform tests, recover solvent for quality analysis and familiarize client personnel with the process design.

• A wind tunnel capable of testing the adsorption capacity of filter units up to 1,000 scfm is available. Temperature and humidity conditions can be controlled.

• Segmented columns containing adsorbents can be provided for installation at client=s sites to perform slip stream studies for purification of effluent streams.

• Small scale equipment can be designed and built to client requirements.
